Sportswriter William E. "Billy" Beard, a quarterback from the 1892 squad, gave Vanderbilt the nickname "Commodores" in 1897. He was referring to Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt, who gave a large donation to the university that bears his name in 1873 and, as noted above, was a "Commodore." What might not have been known to Beard (or most, for that matter) is that the term "Commodore" was made to poke fun at Vanderbilt. In his early life made his money as a ferry captain between Manhattan and Staten Island. A man of great ambition, the other boat captains called him "Commodore."
One Star and a V make up Vanderbilt's athletic logo, adapted from the rank insignia of the commodore in the navy. Black and gold were selected by the school's first football team and everyone just went with them!
