Wow, you get some linguistic history here! "Utta"
means "higher" or "up" in Navajo, was adopted by
the Spanish, and the word was also adopted by
English speakers. Deseret, meaning land of the
honeybees, comes from the Book of Mormon, but
members of Congress preferred Utah as the name
of the state.
Since the early 1900s, Utah athletes have been
called either Redskins or Utes. For reasons that
you have undoubtedly read about, in the 1970s,
the school dropped Redskins from use. The
name Utes was derived from the Shoshone tribe
(Utes) that inhabited the region. Moreover, the
name still suits the school, since Vernal is only
170 miles from Salt Lake City and there is a
Ute Indian reservation there. In the 1970s, when
many Indian organizations were upset with the
commercial use of their names for school mascots,
university officials dropped the moniker Redskins
and adopted Utes as the sole nickname of the
school.
