Afterwards, the Senate polled students for a new
nickname and came up with three choices:
Minutemen, Statesmen, and Artichokes. We should
be glad they didn't select artichokes! As a result
of this poll, Minutemen became the school's
mascot. This seems appropriate because of the
state's importance during the revolutionary war,
and that minutemen- who were able to fight on
short notice- trained in Massachusetts.
The University of Massachusetts changed their mascot
from Redmen in 1972 in response to pressure from
Native American groups. Upon receiving this request,
the administration quickly advised all personnel,
administrative staff, athletic personnel, as well as the
media to refrain from using the term Redmen.
