From Tennessee's own nickname, the university takes its nickname. Tennessee became known as the Volunteer State in the early 1800s when General Andrew Jackson gathered large armies from his home state to fight the Indians and then the British. When Gov. Aaron V. Brown called on 2,800 men to battle Santa Ana during the Mexican-American War, more than 30,000 Tennessee men volunteered. Tennessee soldiers wore cavalry uniforms during the battle and the UT color guard still wears them.The blue tick coonhound became the school's mascot in 1953. The breed is native to Tennessee, and Smokey can be seen at major sporting events for the school.
