Journalists in the area referred to San Diego
State's teams as Skaters and Professors early on,
but for almost 100 years, San Diego State
University had been known as the Aztecs. School
officials unanimously approved the name Aztec,
which was proposed by school newspaper and
yearbook editors Fred Osenberg and Lewis
Schellbach. Whittier College isn't a major rival of
San Diego State now, but when the school was
approved, its colors were purple and gold, as was
San Diego States. This was also true of St.
Augustine High in San Diego, whose lettermen's
jackets were quite similar to the university's. On
January 18, 1928, students voted for new school
colors, choosing scarlet and black.
