In early autumn of 1909, Pitt adopted the panther as its mascot at a student-alumni meeting. George M. P. Baird, class of 1909 argued that panthers had, in the past, lived in Pittsburgh, are a noble creatures, and (well) panther starts with "P" which is good for Pittsburgh! No other university had selected the panther for their mascot, also making the selection novel for the time.
