Penn State
Let's start with a geography lesson: Penn State is located at the foot of Mount Nittany in the heart of the Nittany Valley. This is where Nittany comes from when calling Penn State's mascot a "Nittany Lion." In 1906, Penn State students chose the mountain lion as their mascot, which roamed the mountains of central Pennsylvania in earlier times. Inspired by the Princeton Tiger, Joe Mason '07, pushed for Penn State to adopt a school mascot. The student newspaper sponsored the campaign, and Penn State became the first university in the nation to adopt a lion as its mascot (probably).
After a short stint wearing black and pink as their school colors, the school adopted blue and white in the 1880s.
