In 1936, Judge Ben Guider proposed the name Mississippi
Rebels. Since then, the school has been referred to as the
Rebels. The student newspaper, The Mississippian, promoted a
mascot selection contest, and from an original list of 200
nicknames, Rebels was among five final entries sent to southern
sports writers for final selection. What is odd about this is that
they let the reporters decide- not the students. It was an
overwhelming victor for "Rebels" with 18 of 21 responding
journalists selecting it as their number one choice.
As noted by a representative of the athletic committee:
“if 18 sportswriters wish to use ‘Rebels,’ I shall not rebel, so let
it go, Ol’ Miss Rebels.”Two years later, the yearbook was renamed
The Rebel Number, and Colonel Reb has been a prominent symbol
of the university thereafter.
