The LSU Tigers has been shortened from the previous handle of
the "Fighting Tigers." Where did this come from? As you will
read in several articles on this site, Princeton alums often
became professors or college administrators, which prompted a
lot of schools to select the tiger as their mascot. Of course, LSU
did not adopt orange and black as their colors, making them
somewhat unique for this mascot. For LSU, they were not
influenced by Princeton, and the term tiger dates back to the
civil war.
At the Battle of Shenandoah, a Louisiana battalion made a
notable contribution on the Confederate side with its New
Orleans Zouaves and Donaldsonville Cannoners. This
Confederate fighting band was known as the Louisiana Tigers.
As a result of their undefeated football team of 1896, LSU
adopted the nickname Tigers.
