Because agriculture is the school's primary field
of study, the athletic teams were originally known
as the Aggies. Head coach Chief Bender gave the
1915 Kansas State University football team the
nickname wildcats for their fighting spirit. However,
the nickname initially didn't stick. During the
1916-1917 season, Kansas State's teams were
renamed the Farmers. Succeeding Bender, in
1920 Coach Charles Bachman switched the team
name back to the Wildcats hoping to inspire more
aggressive play. The nickname wildcats have been
used ever since.
