The G.I. Bill after World War Two made going to college a reality for many returning soldiers. Of course, this put pressure on educational institutions, with Florida in the strange position of not having enough space for returning soldiers. As such, the school, which had traditionally been a women's college, became coed. Florida State University was officially renamed Florida State University in 1947. The next year, the students formed a football team.The student body was asked to submit ideas for the school's nickname between the first and second games of the season. Ultimately, the name Seminoles was the high vote-getter, narrowly defeating "the Statesmen" and thankfully also defeating "the Crackers."Florida State University was the first university in the country to use the name Seminoles, a tribe closely associated with the state.Perhaps more interestingly, the mascots were devised by iconic football coach Bobby Bowden’s wife.
